NORTH AMERICAN B-25J "MITCHELL"
The unique and remarkable B-25J Mitchell is a flying legend, named after General William Mitchell. This American twin-engine bomber is famous mainly because it was the first bomber to be able to take off from an aircraft carrier, with a runway of only 250 meters!
The B-25 Mitchell is another product of North American Aviation, with a total of 10,000 produced between 1941 and 1945. The main distinguishing feature of this bomber is the distinctive twin tail. Other features are the glass nose and the gunnery loop at the end of the fuselage. The Mitchell, which came from the stable of the Austrian group The Flying Bulls, is the version of the B-25J that became the most common. It has a number of improvements over earlier models, including a de-icing system. The aircraft is, of course, demilitarised so that it can be put on the civil register and flown at events.
This is a truly unique flying showpiece that is a highlight of any airshow, a true legend. The B-25J Mitchell is simply one of the finest products of the US Air Force. There are also several legends and stories about the Mitchell, and you can read two of them at The Flying Bulls (see link below).
